One weekday evening a Corgi-mix attempted to cross a street in rush hour traffic. The inevitable happened. According to an eyewitness, the car that hit the dog did not stop, nor did it slow down. The dog was lying in the street safeguarded by some bystanders. She was alert, but unable to get up or move. She was shivering, most probably due to shock. While waiting on Animal Control and the police, one of the spectators, heartbroken by the dog’s condition and situation, volunteered to take her to the nearest animal hospital.
At the clinic, Sweetie was given a thorough examination. She was suffering from several abrasions and one of her injuries was damage to her right femur. The X-rays revealed a bone broken in three different places. The dog was stabilized, given an IV and made comfortable for the night with pain-relieving medication. She had a blood panel done and was started on antibiotics. She had no identification tags, nor was she microchipped, so there was no hope of reuniting her with her owner.
Post-surgery
The dog was moved to another facility a couple of days later. The vet there discovered Sweetie had a left inguinal hernia which had not revealed itself while she was at the previous hospital. From the X-rays, he strongly believed her right femur could be saved. Her bone would have to be plated and pinned. While waiting for the special order, bone plate and pins to arrive, Sweetie had her hernia repaired and was also spayed. The veterinarian surmised that her hernia may have been more painful than her broken leg because her uterus was bulging through the muscles of her groin. Two days after her first surgery, Sweetie went back into the operating suite to have her leg plated and pinned. How did this little dog endure all of that pain?
In the meantime, arrangements were made with a local rescue group to place Sweetie with a foster family, while during her recovery. Once totally healed, she will be placed for adoption.
Animals Abused & Abandoned helped pay for Sweetie’s emergency medical care. We were told that Sweetie was a real trooper throughout this whole ordeal. She was loved by everyone who came in contact with her. Just the sweetest dog! Had it not been for several caring individuals, Sweetie would not have survived her injuries.
Thanksgiving — this is the period of the year when we reflect on how fortunate we are, and how abundantly rich our lives are.
